A Message from Pastor Brian Mercer

As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of First Methodist Monroe, my heart is filled with gratitude, awe, and humility. Two centuries ago, a small group of believers planted a Methodist witness here in Monroe, never imagining how far their faithfulness would reach. Through wars, floods, cultural shifts, and seasons of challenge and renewal, God has continued to breathe life into this congregation. As we look back, one truth rises above all others: God has been faithful. Faithful to guide, comfort, challenge, and call us forward. Our mission, “Becoming People of Christ,” is more than a slogan. It is the thread woven through our history, from circuit riders and Sunday School teachers to choirs, mission teams, pastors, and faithful members serving Christ across generations. Rooted in 1 John 3:1–3, this mission reminds us that becoming people of Christ is both a gift and a calling. As we celebrate this bicentennial, we honor the saints who came before us, the ministries that shaped lives, the worship that lifted hearts, the mission that reached beyond our walls, and the resilience of a church that kept moving forward in faith. The world will continue to change, but our calling remains steady: to become people of Christ who love deeply, serve faithfully, worship passionately, and witness boldly. Thank you for being part of this extraordinary story. The same God who sustained us for 200 years will lead us into the next chapter with grace enough for every step.

Looking Forward to Our Next 200 Years,

Rev. Dr. Brian Mercer
